John Kyrle Walk

John Kyrle was a philanthropist who lived in the 17th century and become known as the ‘Man of Ross’. The circular John Kyrle walk follows a route from the Prospect Gardens by St Mary’s church out along the ridge to fields and then loops back to the town alongside the river. In historical terms, the Prospect and John Kyrle Walk are highly significant in that they were laid out around 1700, half a century before the Picturesque movement discovered the river Wye.  The Prospect belongs, therefore, to the very earliest stages of the development of picturesque landscaping.
